Gildan Yarns is closing one of its plants in Salisbury, North Carolina, and plans to lay off 254 of the 550 staff. The terminated staff are not represented by a union and are able to transfer to other facilities in Salisbury and Mocksville, North Carolina. The layoffs are happening in the Heilig Road manufacturing plant.
“This facility is being closed as part of Gildan’s plan to continue to balance production and inventory levels to drive an efficient and competitive manufacturing platform,” Jim Powers, director of human resources at Gildan in Sanford, North Carolina, says in a letter to state officials.
The Montreal-based company comprising American Apparel, Gildan activewear, Goldtoe, and Peds, is one of the largest manufacturers of apparel, underwear, and socks.
